SPOTLIGHT: Nosaj Thing

Copied from Nosaj Thing's Myspace:

L.A.-based producer Nosaj Thing (Jason Chung) is a sound innovator. He's a sweet kid with a sinister musical agenda. His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener's mind as deeply as he hits their soul. Without a doubt, Nosaj Thing is among L.A.'s finest musical modulators.

Jason's early work came awkwardly but not at all haphazardly. At age 13, he took his first computer from his father, an archaic PC that struggled even with word documents. In the hands of Nosaj Thing, it became an Intel Celeron home studio. With a "donated" copy of Reason, a demo version of Ableton Live and a computer mouse (he couldn't afford a MIDI controller), Nosaj Thing began making music. He built his first productions note for note on the electronic staff of his Frankenstein studio. When your focus is strong, all you really need is a machine that works.

In high school, Jason picked up a day job at a local music store, focusing his efforts on the arduous task of saving up for his first Mac. But Destiny had become fond of Nosaj Thing's resolve. In a contest, Jason won a favored producer tool: his own honest copy of Logic Pro. Wild circumstances? Perhaps. But he's still using it, winning beat battles, remix contests, gigging and DJing within his network of like-minded musical vigilantes. Now 22, Nosaj Thing creates nothing less than the sound mastery of beat driven, experimental electronics from a gifted noise constructor.

Nosaj Thing has received Artist-to-Watch accolades from XLR8R, remixed Daedelus and Elliot Lipp, won Plastic Little/Turntable Lab's remix contest featuring MF Doom, and won L.A.'s prestigious Project Blowed beat battle. He has shared the stage with the likes of Sixtoo, Architecture in Helsinki, DJ Krush, Z-Trip, Free the Robots, Eliott Lipp, D-Styles, Edit, and Daedelus. He's a staple and a crowd pleaser at L.A.'s underground hip-hop good time, Low End Theory. Comparisons run along with Ratatat, DJ Shadow, and Boards of Canada. A survey of his own record collection will turn up pieces from Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Radiohead, Daft Punk and Eric Satie. In so little time, he's accomplished so much. With his first full-length in the works, be prepared to hear a lot more noise from Nosaj Thing.

Nosaj Thing's self-released EP, "Views / Octopus," is available on iTunes.

LOL WUT: The Roots on Yo Gabba Gabba

I got this from a site called Zoogobble.com via Okayplayer

Well, I've told you about the second season of Yo Gabba Gabba! -- that's going strong. And I've told you about the upcoming soundtrack, set to be released tomorrow through iTunes.

Now both are set to come together in one giant you-got-peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate sort of combination.

Because I've got an mp3 from that soundtrack for your listening pleasure that -- unlike most of the rest of the album -- is actually a Season Two track.

Trust me, even if you're all Yo Gabba Whatta?, you're going to want to hear this...

It's from the Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots, and it's a totally mesmerizing song called "Lovely, Love My Family." You just have to listen, courtesy of Viacom.

An interview with yours truly

http://blocsonic.com/blog/just_plain_ant_hits_us_with_5_for_insight

A shining example of the quality hip-hop that's available for free in the world of netaudio. Just Plain Ant was featured on netBloc Vol. 17 with his track "Revolution", featuring the fierce lyrical skills of Precise. Here Just Plain Ant breaks down the hows, whys and whats. Check it…

01 Why free music? Right now, I’m simply an up and coming artist, and I love what I do to the point where money isn’t even important to me as a musician. I simply want people to hear the music I make and appreciate it as an art form (plus people love free stuff. lol.)

02 Your production style seems to take the best from back in the day and updates it with a bit of flavor from today. What inspires you to try and bridge the two? Is it intentional? It’s definitely intentional, because I feel that the back in the day hip-hop is an incredible way to make people nod their heads. I like to add today’s flavor to the mix, because I feel that you have to change at least a bit with the times. If I were to just completely emulate the old sounds, it would just sound like I’m stuck on one era and I refuse to add something new to it.

03 During the late 80s and early 90s it seemed that the “Producer” became the “star”. The producer also seemed to be the one with the deeper understanding and knowledge of music. The one who knew all the great or unknown records. This knowledge came from listening to a wide range of genres. As a producer, do you try and live up to that? If so, name a few of your sonic influences from outside the realm of hip-hop. I definitely do try to live up to that. I find influence in music from Radiohead, Zero 7, John Coltrane, The Beatles, and so many more that would take pages to list.

04 What was the last free netaudio album you downloaded and listened to? Girl Talk - Feed The Animals. He’s such a dope DJ and I’m dyin’ to see him live.

05 Linn, 808, SR-16 or live?
Live. I really want to incorporate live drums into my music, because you can feel the intensity that the drummer’s putting into what he plays.

SLEAZE!!

I wish somebody would try to tell me that Richmond doesn't have dope ass hip-hop. You need this in your life. Right Now. That's all I gotta say. Do the research.

Two highly anticipated albums dropped today

You know that I've been looking forward to L7 by Count Bass D. It dropped today but I haven't heard more than the snippets sadly enough. I'm broke, but pay day is Friday. It's crazy. This man just dropped today, and he already announced that he just finished another album called Here Comes The Neighborhood. So the excitement isn't over.

Oh yeah, the reason I'm now broke.

Definitely one of my favorite R&B album of the year. The standouts to me are the title track, Sweeter Than You, Take Off The Blues, If This Is Love and If She Breaks Your Heart (shit, I just listed about half of the album). It's definitely not Connected II. It's actually doper (@ least to me, you may disagree).

Neither album is available physically, so go to iTunes and download em both. You won't regret it.

Journey Through The Crates 1: Bob James - BJ4

One of my favorite purchases as of late. I can't begin to tell you how many times Nautilus or Feel Like Makin' Love have been sampled, but because of that, I dug deep (no pun intended) into the music of Bob James. I found BJ4 in one of my recent digs and I must say. This dude is great for hip-hop. Not only that, but he's also fantastic to vibe to. If you ever get the opportunity to chill to some Bob James, I SWEAR TO GOD, do not turn it down. This is music.
