MAAN!! Fuck A Grammy. (Long read, be prepared)

So I just saw Lil Wayne and Ne-Yo get nominated for AOTY @ the Grammy's. I got pissed off, and then I thought about it: I'M DOIN MY LISTS FOR THIS YEAR! (Done in no specific order unless I say so)

WORST ALBUM OF THE YEAR (and why) (only 5 of these):
1. Lil Wayne "The Carter III" - 2 Words: Phone Home
2. Common "Universal Mind Control" - I've never been so disappointed in my life. At first run through I kinda liked it, but when I listened to the whole album, I learned that that shit was buttjuice (yes, buttjuice.) First, Peace love and gap and now, this?!?! Come on, Com. But I can commend him on soundin energized. One thing he did right on this album.
3. Kanye West "808's and Heartbreak" - Okay, Kanye. I get what you're tryin' to do. Listen, you pretentious bastard. You can't be all like "I use the autotune to symbolize heartbreak." Nigga, you used autotune, because you can't sing but wanted wayyyyy too bad to be a pop star. Cut the bullshit, fam. It'd be better if your album didn't suck complete ass.
4. T-Pain "Thr33 Ringz" - Haven't heard it, but I just know
5. Usher "Here I Stand" - Okay, you've had good album after good album after good album. Then you take a hiatus, and come back with this?! I was only somewhat disappointed w/ Jay-Z b/c he did his own thing. It just coulda been better, but you did the same shit every other R&B "singer" is doing. Come on, fam. Step it up.

20 BEST SONGS OF THE YEAR:
1. Black Milk "Try"
2. Erykah Badu "That Hump"
3. Adele "Chasing Pavements"
4. Raphael Saadiq "Love That Girl"
5. Foreign Exchange feat. Yahzarah "If This Is Love"
6. My Morning Jacket "Thank You"
7. The Roots feat. Malik B and Porn "I Can't Help It"
8. Flying Lotus "RobertaFlack"
9. Unforscene "So Long"
10. Nas "Breathe"
11. 14KT "ICU Smile"
12. Black Milk feat. Royce Da 5'9" "Losing Out"
13. 88-Keys feat. Kid Cudi "Wasting My Minutes"
14. Kid Cudi feat. Wale "Is There Any Love?"
15. Q-Tip "You"
16. Jazzanova feat. Phonte "So Far From Home"
17. John Legend feat. Andre 3000 "Green Light"
18. Santogold "Creator"
19. N.E.R.D. "Yeah You"
20. Busta Rhymes "Don't Touch Me"

10 BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (top 3 are in order):
10. Al Green "Lay It Down"
9. Erykah Badu "New AmErykah, Pt. 1: The 4th World War"
8. Raphael Saadiq "The Way I See It"
7. Foreign Exchange "Leave It All Behind"
6. Wale "The Mixtape About Nothing" (does it count if... FUCK IT! IT DOES!"
5. Flying Lotus "Los Angeles"
4. The Roots "Rising Down"
3. Black Milk "Tronic"
2. Nas "Nigger" (I know it's Untitled, but it'll always be Nigger to me)
1. Q-Tip "The Renaissance"
Honorable Mentions: Portishead "Third", 14KT "The Golden Hour", Kid Cudi "A Kid Named Cudi", Zo! and Tigallo Love The 80's, Elzhi "The Preface"

MVP OF THE YEAR: PHONTE
1.) Zo! and Tigallo Love The 80's
2.) Foreign Exchange
3.) An insane amount of collabos
He's that dude this yr.

ALSO, for the first time ever, I've had an album which has simultaneously been one of the best AND worst album of the year. That would be...
Illa J "Yancey Boys" - The beats are AMAZING!, but Illa J's not exactly what you would call a lyrical monster. Nearly... I woulda loved to hear Pharcyde (or somebody else!) on a few of those tracks.

Ah! That's done. Can't wait for 2009 to start.

Ant Goes To DC

Last night, EENJ and I went to DC to see Foreign Exchange at the Black Cat. It was an amazing show. We met Phonte, Nicolay, Yahzarah, Zo!, and Muhsinah. They were all cool ass people. There's the short version of the story.

Now we go on to the major part. When we got there we met some dope ass people. T-Squared (look him up on myspace. dope dope emcee.) and The Pretty Brown Girl (check out Hey, You Asked! in the links on the right side of the page) were chillin the front row when we walked up. We just kicked it for a minute, and then that's when the conversation of the overabundance of emcees and producers came up. Elijah introduced me as their producer. I was kinda like "Uh oh, I'm just like the 10,000,000 other dudes that are 'producers' that are out there tryin' to do their thing." Then T-Squared shared m feelings in tellin' me how sometimes he's scared to tell people he raps. Funny things like that happen. It got me feeling like it was gonna be hard to make it, even for people as talented as us, because everybody's out there trying to do it.

After the concert finished, we went downstairs to the bar, and on the way in, we saw Muhsinsah. Justin walked up to here and asked to buy her a drink. We all went inside and chatted a bit. The "producer" introduction happened again. All I could say was "yeah...I...do what i can...", following by an awkward glance around the room, but fuck all that. Justin asked "What did you do to blow up? Did you put yourself out there or were you found?" She told him she was found by Common and he randomly just called her. As a result of that, she told us to just keep doin' what we do, and if it's meant to be, it will. She went through a lot in order to be recognized, because she felt it was right. Look where she is now. Featured on Common's album. That's an amazing story to me.

I don't know what's gonna happen to me in the future, but I guess I'll find out soon. Last night was amazing. And I met some dope ass people. I'll see y'all around.

This Is Martin's Dream

I wish Dr. King and my grandmother were still alive to see the first black president. History has been made.

JUST PLAIN (R)ANT: Beyonce's "Single Ladies" and Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust Your Windows"

Ok, so I got stuck in traffic on the way home today, and my iPod died. Anyone that knows me knows that I can't really stand the radio but I decided that I would listen to 106.5 The Beat (for those that don't know, that's an Richmond rap/R&B station). While I was sitting, "Single Ladies", came on. First and foremost, the song is ass and I really am sick of Beyonce. REALLLLLLY sick. I mean WHO THE FUCK IS SASHA FIERCE?!?! And to add to all of that, she makes this song that basically is making every girl out there is livin' by this shit!! "If you like it, then you better put a ring on it." What?! Really?! Now girls are runnin' around tryna get dudes to marry em. Calm down!!! It'll happen when it happens. Dammit, Beyonce, you're fuckin' up the game.

Speakin' of fuckin up the game, we've got Jazmine Sullivan talkin' bout bustin' dudes' windows. Makin' women madder and shit. I really don't have to say much about that except, fellas, DO. NOT. CHEAT., especially if you love your car. But do not cheat. Don't do it. If you think about it, think about Jazmine Sullivan. She may have gotten into your girl's head. Be smart; don't be a retard (c) Eminem.

netBloc Volume 18 (frais, fresco, frisch, fresh… mmmmmmmmmmm… good)

After taking a much needed month off from releasing, we’re back with another fresh batch of netaudio gems. Even with the month off, it was a bit of a bumpy ride pulling this together. During the process of attempting to acquire permissions and assets, we were unable to finalize on four original tracks and went through two rounds of changes. As is always the case though, this process ends up being beneficial for the release — since the line-up/track order is always scrutinized repeatedly until it’s just right.

This group of songs brings to you music from Canada, US, Italy, France and Germany. The music comes to you in the form of Rock, Pop, Trip-Hop, Dub & Hip-Hop. You’ll also find that this month features a fantastic bonus track!

I knew from the start that I wanted to include a track from Brad Sucks’ latest release “Out Of It”. Little did I know how hard it would be to pick only one. I literally tried out every track from the album in the line-up. Finally, I realized that I couldn’t settle on just one and decided that I’d include two tracks from what is an incredible album. So if you haven’t heard Brad’s latest, here’s your chance to sample it. After hearing them, it’s quite likely that you’ll end up needing to give his whole album a listen.

The final noteworthy aspect about netBloc Vol. 18 is the fact that track eight is a little preview of what’s to come here at blocSonic. Original releases. I’ve previously mentioned that we were flirting with the idea, but hadn’t yet made a final decision. Well that final decision was made when a recently featured artist, Just Plain Ant, showed interest in the idea of releasing his upcoming project “Dig Deep” at blocSonic. Each release from the upcoming blocSonic original series will be released in the same formats and with the same features that you’ve come to expect from blocSonic releases. Three audio formats — Lossless FLAC, 320kbs MP3 and 192kbs MP3. Three album art formats — EPS, PDF and TIF. One excellent PDF booklet containing complete liner-notes and photos. In the first year we’re going to test out releasing originals four times a year. Since we’re going to be very selective about who we release, four releases a year seems like a reasonable limit in the beginning.

So there you go… another netBloc release for you to enjoy. We hope you do!

SPOTLIGHT: Nosaj Thing

Copied from Nosaj Thing's Myspace:

L.A.-based producer Nosaj Thing (Jason Chung) is a sound innovator. He's a sweet kid with a sinister musical agenda. His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener's mind as deeply as he hits their soul. Without a doubt, Nosaj Thing is among L.A.'s finest musical modulators.

Jason's early work came awkwardly but not at all haphazardly. At age 13, he took his first computer from his father, an archaic PC that struggled even with word documents. In the hands of Nosaj Thing, it became an Intel Celeron home studio. With a "donated" copy of Reason, a demo version of Ableton Live and a computer mouse (he couldn't afford a MIDI controller), Nosaj Thing began making music. He built his first productions note for note on the electronic staff of his Frankenstein studio. When your focus is strong, all you really need is a machine that works.

In high school, Jason picked up a day job at a local music store, focusing his efforts on the arduous task of saving up for his first Mac. But Destiny had become fond of Nosaj Thing's resolve. In a contest, Jason won a favored producer tool: his own honest copy of Logic Pro. Wild circumstances? Perhaps. But he's still using it, winning beat battles, remix contests, gigging and DJing within his network of like-minded musical vigilantes. Now 22, Nosaj Thing creates nothing less than the sound mastery of beat driven, experimental electronics from a gifted noise constructor.

Nosaj Thing has received Artist-to-Watch accolades from XLR8R, remixed Daedelus and Elliot Lipp, won Plastic Little/Turntable Lab's remix contest featuring MF Doom, and won L.A.'s prestigious Project Blowed beat battle. He has shared the stage with the likes of Sixtoo, Architecture in Helsinki, DJ Krush, Z-Trip, Free the Robots, Eliott Lipp, D-Styles, Edit, and Daedelus. He's a staple and a crowd pleaser at L.A.'s underground hip-hop good time, Low End Theory. Comparisons run along with Ratatat, DJ Shadow, and Boards of Canada. A survey of his own record collection will turn up pieces from Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Radiohead, Daft Punk and Eric Satie. In so little time, he's accomplished so much. With his first full-length in the works, be prepared to hear a lot more noise from Nosaj Thing.

Nosaj Thing's self-released EP, "Views / Octopus," is available on iTunes.

LOL WUT: The Roots on Yo Gabba Gabba

I got this from a site called Zoogobble.com via Okayplayer

Well, I've told you about the second season of Yo Gabba Gabba! -- that's going strong. And I've told you about the upcoming soundtrack, set to be released tomorrow through iTunes.

Now both are set to come together in one giant you-got-peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate sort of combination.

Because I've got an mp3 from that soundtrack for your listening pleasure that -- unlike most of the rest of the album -- is actually a Season Two track.

Trust me, even if you're all Yo Gabba Whatta?, you're going to want to hear this...

It's from the Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots, and it's a totally mesmerizing song called "Lovely, Love My Family." You just have to listen, courtesy of Viacom.

An interview with yours truly

http://blocsonic.com/blog/just_plain_ant_hits_us_with_5_for_insight

A shining example of the quality hip-hop that's available for free in the world of netaudio. Just Plain Ant was featured on netBloc Vol. 17 with his track "Revolution", featuring the fierce lyrical skills of Precise. Here Just Plain Ant breaks down the hows, whys and whats. Check it…

01 Why free music? Right now, I’m simply an up and coming artist, and I love what I do to the point where money isn’t even important to me as a musician. I simply want people to hear the music I make and appreciate it as an art form (plus people love free stuff. lol.)

02 Your production style seems to take the best from back in the day and updates it with a bit of flavor from today. What inspires you to try and bridge the two? Is it intentional? It’s definitely intentional, because I feel that the back in the day hip-hop is an incredible way to make people nod their heads. I like to add today’s flavor to the mix, because I feel that you have to change at least a bit with the times. If I were to just completely emulate the old sounds, it would just sound like I’m stuck on one era and I refuse to add something new to it.

03 During the late 80s and early 90s it seemed that the “Producer” became the “star”. The producer also seemed to be the one with the deeper understanding and knowledge of music. The one who knew all the great or unknown records. This knowledge came from listening to a wide range of genres. As a producer, do you try and live up to that? If so, name a few of your sonic influences from outside the realm of hip-hop. I definitely do try to live up to that. I find influence in music from Radiohead, Zero 7, John Coltrane, The Beatles, and so many more that would take pages to list.

04 What was the last free netaudio album you downloaded and listened to? Girl Talk - Feed The Animals. He’s such a dope DJ and I’m dyin’ to see him live.

05 Linn, 808, SR-16 or live?
Live. I really want to incorporate live drums into my music, because you can feel the intensity that the drummer’s putting into what he plays.

Two highly anticipated albums dropped today

You know that I've been looking forward to L7 by Count Bass D. It dropped today but I haven't heard more than the snippets sadly enough. I'm broke, but pay day is Friday. It's crazy. This man just dropped today, and he already announced that he just finished another album called Here Comes The Neighborhood. So the excitement isn't over.

Oh yeah, the reason I'm now broke.

Definitely one of my favorite R&B album of the year. The standouts to me are the title track, Sweeter Than You, Take Off The Blues, If This Is Love and If She Breaks Your Heart (shit, I just listed about half of the album). It's definitely not Connected II. It's actually doper (@ least to me, you may disagree).

Neither album is available physically, so go to iTunes and download em both. You won't regret it.

Hand me my late pass, but...

Journey Through The Crates 1: Bob James - BJ4

One of my favorite purchases as of late. I can't begin to tell you how many times Nautilus or Feel Like Makin' Love have been sampled, but because of that, I dug deep (no pun intended) into the music of Bob James. I found BJ4 in one of my recent digs and I must say. This dude is great for hip-hop. Not only that, but he's also fantastic to vibe to. If you ever get the opportunity to chill to some Bob James, I SWEAR TO GOD, do not turn it down. This is music.

C'mon, Count Bass D! Bring the L7

Ok, so when you ask people what their most anticipated album of the 4th quarter is. They'll say something like Common, Kanye, T.I., Jay-Z, yadda yadda ya. Nahhhhh. Mine is L7 by Count Bass D, and I've been waitin' for it since like June. I get impatient. Everytime I listen to Neon Soul, I get antsy, because the shit hasn't dropped yet. Dig Deep

First of all, another major thanks to all those that downloaded "Fly". I've been hearin' nothing but good things about it, and that's a beautiful thing, because I worked mad hard on it.

Speaking of hard work, more is to come soon, including Precise's solo album Why Try?, Elijah's Bonus Life 9606, and Brad Oblivion's debut solo EP, Due Season. I'm very excited about those projects, but the most excitement comes from another project. That would be the follow-up to Fly, which is titled Dig Deep. (No offense to EENJ and Brad O., but this shit is beyond just exciting to me).

It may seem soon, but like my man Brad O. always says, you're only good as the latest shit you put out. Right now, I only have 2 completed songs for it (the title track featuring and co-produced by Alex Murphy and "Can't Say Goodbye" featuring Elijah of EENJ). It's gonna be a mix between hip-hop and downtempo music. I've constantly been tellin myself that I wanna do something different with my music. Fly was such a dark and most of the times, hard to swallow album, that I decided that I would make a lighter, more mellow album that'll ease your mind. Then as I started it, all of these really dark things happened that caused me to dig deep within myself and think about all the different emotions that one can go through. It's gonna be really moody so be ready. As of now, I'm not spittin' verses on it, but you'll be able to feel how I feel. I don't have many more details about the album right now, but I just couldn't wait to tell someone. Congratulations. You're that person.

New track from the album coming within the next week.

Peace,
Ant

EENJ's album, A New Day, will be available on August 8th. You should definitely check out for that if you enjoyed Fly.

The Buildup

Aight, so tomorrow I'm releasing my debut album, "Fly". Until then, I leave you with a preview.

Altogether, I originally planned for the album to be more laid back, but I guess things don't always go according to plans. Whatever, though. the people I've let hear it say it's amazing. I'll even say I do like it a lot now, but get back to me in a few months on that.

1. Somethin' Else (Intro) - You'll recognize it, trust me.

2. God Willin' - Crazy Afro-Brazilian joint. English was the only language I was expecting to hear on this album, but as I said before, things do change. This was a good change. Every verse has a different feel to it, but every one works with the track.

3. Up The Stakes - Somewhat of a De La Soul tribute (which you should understand by looking at the title). Pretty heavy hittin track with lyrics that speak the truth about the industry and don't just straight up bash it without a strong argument. I won't be gettin' tired of this anytime soon, and you shouldnt either

4. I'm So - Smooth, top-down, cruisin' track. I initially planned to have an album that fit that feel more, but obviously, that wasn't how people were feeling during the recording of this album. In my head before I met EENJ, this track was a Score One track. It ended up being a Brad O. and EENJ track, which came out absolutely perfectly. Best if played at night with your good clothes on.

5. Nothing Left to Say - Deep, reflective track that set the mood for the rest of the album. When I first listened to Mic Jordan's songs, I knew this beat was pretty much made for him, so I made it happen. One of my favorite songs (Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy") came to make one of my new favorites. History repeats itself.

6. No Eraser, Pt. 1 - Only took two takes and has an incredibly raw sound over a Ghostfaced Ahmad Jamal sample. I felt as if this song shouldn't have been polished or anything, because it captured the moments where Justin and I were just vibin' with Brad and he would just freestyle full tracks. Stay on the lookout for Brad O. He's gonna fuck shit up.

7. Love - One of the lighter tracks on the album (but it's still very reflective). It captured a B-Boy feel that I felt was necessary for the album. I came up with he concept while watching the Radio Raheem love and hate fight speech in Do The Right Thing. You will have a smile on your face at the end of this song.

8. Got Me Goin' - Okay, now wipe the smile off of your face. Think about the most stressful moments you've had in your life. If you're goin' crazy (or have gone crazy before), you'll definitely be able to appreciate this song.

9. Revolution - Justin hates America. The End. Just kidding. Well, kinda.

10. Pain & Jeopardy - You learn a lot about Rasul in this song, but he's not doin' your cliche "It's My Life" track that the shittiest of rappers tries to pull off. It's way more to this concept. Rasul asks questions to himself about what's gone on throughout his life as he looks at the positives of the things that have happened.

11. Stay High - This track took the longest to get back to me because of different connections that were made during the whole process, but it was more than worth the wait. Joey Ripps and Luck explore the changes in the world. It's becoming cold, but you've gotta stay up.

12. If I Don't - My boy Cam wanted 2 get his boy Millz on a track and I heard some of his freestyles and thought they were incredibly ill, but I never heard an actual song by him. He came through on this one. He definitely makes you wanna start a revolution after all the terrible bullshit has happened. Hell, I might even do it tomorrow.

13. No Eraser, Pt. 2 - Brad O's execution of the card theme was impeccable. See the last 2 sentences of track 6.

14. Fly - The whole album may have been incredibly dark, but we're gonna end it on a positive note. "Spread your wings and fly". This beat makes it feel like the heavens are opening up and pulling you into something more positive, which is a great transition...

On that note, I wanna announce that I'm starting album 2 right away. It will have that smooth, sometimes chill, sometimes danceable feel that I wanted to capture. After such reflective album, I just wanna let people have a good time. You'll find out if I succeeded in about a year or so.

Peace,
Ant
