VIDEO: Hardcore Gentlemen - Hardcore Gentlemen
YES!!
HARDCORE GENTLEMEN is a early-mid 1990s rap group consisting of group members RAPZ KAOTIC, REEFER SUTHERLAND and KILLAH SILK. The group was based in Brooklynati, USA and saw great success with their classic and only single "HARDCORE GENTLEMEN" (DJ Jurx Records, 1994). Unfortunately, after selling a platinum single and a gold album (RUGGED & SMOOTH, DJ Jurx Records, 1994) their follow-up single, "BRUSH YA TEEF WIT IT" fell on deaf ears and led to the group's destiny of being one-hit-wonders.
Immediately following the release of their hit-single "HARDCORE GENTLEMEN" and in promotion of their debut LP, Hardcore Gentlemen toured the United States and parts of Canada, but ended the tour abruptly when group member KILLAH SILK was slapped with 14 paternity suits from 13 different women. A State Court jury ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and the rap group was forced to return home and try to maintain their momentum doing local gigs in Brooklynati. After the lack of success surrounding their touring efforts, the group faded into obscurity and is remembered only for their successful, self-titled single. They are regularly revisited on countless "Where Are They Now?" television shows profiling hip-hop acts.
So where are they now? In May of 2009, Hardcore Gentlemen attempted to do a 15-year anniversary show celebrating their classic and only single. The plan was to headline a show at Humphrey Lefty's (a concert hall in their own hometown) and to perform their hit 15 times in a row. Tragically, during the 5th performance of "Hardcore Gentlemen" the group became entangled in a fight on stage, resulting in a drawn firearm by one of their hypemen. Shots were fired, and while nobody was killed, two of the group's three members (RAPZ KAOTIC and REEFER SUTHERLAND) were arrested and are currently facing charges for concealing a weapon and endangering minors.

DOWNLOAD: NetBloc Vol. 23: We Invented The Compilation!
Of course we didn’t invent the compilation! Duh! No really! We didn’t… seriously! Why do you doubt me? Even though we didn’t invent them it doesn’t mean we didn’t perfect them… so here’s another perfect compilation for your soul to absorb via your ear canals. A collection of 11 tracks plus one sampler. That’s two bonus tracks on top of the standard 10 track line-up! Whoa! Crazy! I loved the Jay Slim release so much that I simply couldn’t contain myself to only one track. Then Just Plain Ant released the sampler of his upcoming release “The New Black” and I felt that it’d be a perfect addition to the line-up. In fact, I wish other labels/artists released samplers like this. I’d love to feature one with every netBloc release. Consider this an invitation to any of you who may be working on some music and want to begin promoting it early, send us a sampler and it’ll be considered for a future netBloc release. 1 track, no longer than 15 minutes and only send wav, flac or aiff files along with any info you'd like mentioned about the upcoming release. Send files to us via services such as Yousendit.com or you can use our contact form to let us know you'd like to send us something and we can set you up with an ftp account to upload directly to the blocSonic server.
So what sounds can you expect this time around? Industrial, electro-pop, electro-funk, hip-hop, punk, rock, pop-rock and indie-pop from France, Germany, Italy, the UK and the US. Our netBloc releases are always an eclectic, international affair and this time is no different. By the way, if you’re a Boo Radleys fan, you might like to know that one of the featured artists is none other than Martin Carr. Check out his fantastic track “Why You Gotta Bring Me All This Rain?”. Check out the fatty 79 page PDF for details.
Thanks again to all participants and to all of you for checking out netBloc Vol. 23: We Invented The Compilation! Each and every one of you rock! Remember… share this! Give it to friends, enemies and strangers alike! Tell them how much netaudio rocks! When you’re done doing that, be ready… later this month on Tuesday, July 28th is the release of blocSonic’s second original release featuring one of our newest artists, the UK’s Formula and his “The Overcast Project”. A fresh release with complete production from him and featuring artists from the US, UK, Canada & Jamaica. The LP features artists signed to independent labels (LDZ - Dented records), major labels (Aynzli Jones - Mercury) and an unsigned MC called Isayu (from the Bay in Oakland). Then… on Tuesday, August 25th we keep the hip-hop flowing with our third original release by another of our newest artists Luck & Ripp and their “The Catastrophic Connection”. The short song structure, Luck’s intricate flow, Ripp’s deep, creative lyricism and UhOh’s simple loops and boom-bap drum style make the album seem like a bumrush with a softer side. From being “awoke to the ways of the world” to reminiscing on your childhood, this project covers all the bases. So keep your ear to the ground… blocSonic is rumbling on…
Peace

Dope ass instrumental EP from one of my favorite producers out right now.
We are very excited to present Odd Summer, a (mainly) instrumental EP from Put Me On It family member Oddisee. It features three exclusive tracks - In Your Eyes, Sligo Creek, and That Day (instrumental). The photo in the artwork was taken by Oddisee, of Omdurman (Khartoum, Sudan), where he spent every summer growing up, swimming and fishing in the Nile.

Wow, can't say I expected this
Can't say I even remembered dude for a while, but one of my homegirls sent me this joint.
Sources report that early Thursday morning rapper Magoo, real name Melvin Barcliff, was found dead in a hotel room in Portsmouth, Va. Hotel owners said that they checked in "Magoo" two days ago and hadn't heard anything from the resident since the check-in. The cause of death has not been determined. Surrounding the rapper was an MP3 player and a notebook. Writing within the tablet, showed the derangement of a musician, disillusioned by the industry that had "chewed him up and spit him out". Police were called because a hotel associate stumbled upon an unconscious man inside the room. The rapper was believed to be visiting Virginia for a recording session, though he had not had a record out in quite some time. More details to follow.
RIP Magginoo

IT'S HERE! (DIG DEEP THAT IS)
Don’t call it a come-back… allow Just Plain Ant to re-introduce you to blocSonic
by michaelGregoire
Yo Ant! I think you’re too deep for ‘em!
Well we’ve finally come back with that real ish… some real hip-hop for you fiends out there! Coming to you straight outta Richmond, VA. Just Plain Ant’s “Dig Deep” is our premier Original release and it’s available in all the same formats that you’ve come to expect with our netBloc compilations:
* Available in a choice of three high-quality audio formats — Lossless FLAC, 320kbs MP3 and 192kbs MP3.
* Complete album art is available in three formats — EPS, PDF and TIF.
* 40+ page PDF booklet with complete liner-notes, lyrics, photos and album credits.
“Dig Deep” is a shining example of what the independent music world has to offer. It’s also an authentic and innovative hip-hop album that refuses to be boxed in by quick and simple comparisons. With this album, Ant has brought together a terrific bunch of co-producers, vocalists and emcees that have all added their own touch in such a way that doesn’t make this producer-driven album feel like a compilation. Conceptually, there’s no doubt that this album is a whole.
Thanks to Just Plain Ant for his interest in having blocSonic release “Dig Deep”. Also, thanks to Sleaze, EENJ, Jay Slim, Alex Murphy, Elijah, Joey Ripps, Brad Oblivion, Caitlin Meissner and Yarrow Lutz for being a part of this fantastic album. Finally, thanks to Christine Lockerby for her fantastic photographic work.
Still to come this year are two more Original releases (which are scheduled to drop every four months) and more regular netBloc releases. In other news…
blocSonic 2.0!
As you may know from previous posts, we at blocSonic have long been shopping around for the perfect PHP framework. After much trial and consideration, we’ve come to the conclusion that the Yii Framework is perfect for our needs. What you now see in your browser, blocSonic 2.0, is now powered by Yii and PHP. Goodbye Ruby on Rails.
Due to a complete retooling/rethinking of the database schema, we chose not to port users from the old database. What that means for you is that if you previously had a user account, you’ll need to re-register. We’re very sorry about the inconvenience, we just felt that the user system needed a complete overhaul. Currently, the user system is quite limited to only offering no-approval commenting and a profile page. A more fully-featured messaging system and other user features will follow in the coming weeks.
We hope you enjoy the new look and the fresh sounds! Thanks for stopping by… remember… share the music. Burn copies for friends and strangers… peace!

11 Days Left... (via BlocSonic)
By the look of our blog and our Twitter feed, you’d think blocSonic has been asleep at the wheel for the past month/month and a half. Nothing could be further from the truth. It all began last year when we realized that Ruby on Rails just wasn’t cutting it for us. The regular crashes and slow loading times became too much. We then began an incredibly long hunt for THE killer PHP framework to build blocSonic 2.0 on. After trying, testing and re-trying nearly every major framework, we came across Yii Framework and we fell in love. It’s on! 2.0 is coming just in time for our first original release.
On February 24th, the new blocSonic.com will be accompanied by a rich, soulful and above all… meditative hip-hop release by the talented producer/artist Just Plain Ant. The aptly titled ”Dig Deep” sees Ant stepping up his game both conceptually and technically.
One of the problems that usually plagues producers when releasing albums in their own right is the "compilation" effect. Because their albums tend to feature a variety of emcees and singers on top of their productions, the albums usually end up feeling like a mish/mash of tracks that don’t sit well with each other. “Dig Deep” is definitely not among those albums. It’s unmistakable, the care and attention that Ant invested in this release.
You’ll also be hard-pressed to place a neat and tidy label on the sound. You’ve got straight up soul-dripping jams such as Still’ Dreamin (Featuring Jay Slim), Can’t Say Goodbye (Featuring Elijah) and That Goodbye. Then you’ve got Hush which is less “hip-hop” than it is trip-hop/acid-jazz or minimal electro and Dig Deep (Featuring Alex Murphy) which is straight up glitch with a hip-hop feel, appeal to it.
As with our netBloc series, “Dig Deep” audio and album art will be available in multiple formats:
- Audio: Lossless FLAC, 320kbs and 192kbs LAME encoded CBR MP3
- Album art: PDF, EPS & TIF
- Liner notes: 30-40+ page PDF
If my endorsement isn’t enough for you to eagerly anticipate the forthcoming release, you'll find a couple mp3s for your aural pleasure in the album track-list below:
- 01 Hush (7:26)
- 02 Anti-Love (Featuring Sleaze) (4:33)
- 03 32 More (Featuring EENJ) (5:41)
